[Work explanation]Water lily flowers and leaves float on the surface of the pond, where the blue sky and white clouds are reflected. This work, born from a sketch of a garden in Giverny, depicts spring and autumn in a water lily pond in a single painting. The green water lily leaves arranged diagonally across the rectangular screen draw a large curve, dividing the painting space into two. The right side of the screen depicts an autumn river with colorful fallen leaves, and the left side depicts the arrival of spring with cherry blossom rafts covering the surface of the pond. The surface of the water, which depicts the opposite seasons of spring and autumn, expresses the beauty of nature created by the harmony of two different elements, like the yin and yang of a Taiji chart. The style of depicting nature in different seasons in a single painting is a traditional Japanese painting style that has left behind many masterpieces.
